Ahsia Food Stall, Woodlands Centre Road Food Centre

The power is not on the Roti Prata but on the Sardine gravy!

Ahsia Food Stall opens very early in the morning and it closes around 9am or when their Roti Prata are sold out. The queue is always long but it moves quite fast.

Sad to say that the roti prata is quite rubbery and it is not crispy at all. But, I like the sardine gravy very much. It comes with a small chunk of sardine and the gravy is a little spicy and slightly sweet. And yes, you need to pay extra $0.50 (I supposed) for the sardine gravy due to the sardine chunk given.

Why is there always a long queue daily? Is it due to the powerful sardine gravy or? Best that you can check it out yourself.

My Verdict:
Roti Prata – 4/10
Sardine Gravy – 9/10

Overall Verdict: 6.5/10

Marché® Natural Bakery, Discovery Walk at 313 Somerset

Swiss bakery concept..

Being a “bread” person, I look forward to the opening of Marché® Natural Bakery at Somerset313. And yes, it finally opens today. At about 8am, few customers (should be working in the nearby construction areas based on their hard hats and vest) were patronizing the Marche bakery.

Their breads & buns are freshly made at the “see-thru” kitchen daily and they are available for takeaway. At the glass panel, you can see their process of making the breads. Marche Restaurants is connected to the bakery and it is just one level below at level B1. The bakery opens at 8am daily whereas its restaurant opens at 11am daily.

There was an opening promotion - buy 4 mini selections and get 1 for free. Therefore, I picked 3 mini chocolate banana rolls, 1 mini raisin stick and 1 mini herbs roll for $2.40 ($2.55 with GST).

Mini chocolate banana roll – 8/10
The bread texture was sort of “chewy” and not as soft as Asian bakery such as Breadtalk or Swee Heng. I could not taste the “banana” as it was named. But, the generous chocolate chips make this chocolate roll tastes very nice.

Mini raisin roll – 7/10
The difference between this raisin roll and the chocolate roll is merely the fillings, I supposed. I still prefer chocolate chips to raisins.

Mini herbs roll – 8/10
My colleague ate this and commented that this was very nice. The texture was sort of a hard roll and it had a strong aroma flavor. She likes it so much.

Overall Verdict: 8/10

Daily Toast, Killiney Road

New Competitor besides Killiney Kopitiam..

I have not seen reviews on Daily Toast yet since its opening few months ago. It is located next door to Killiney Kopitiam. I walked pass this food outlet many times and it seems very quiet.

Two Sundays ago, we wanted to have our breakfast at Killiney Kopitiam but it was so crowded with all the seats occupied. Therefore, we went to the next door - Daily Toast instead. There was not much customers (less than 3 tables occupied) when we sat down.

We ordered our usual traditional Kaya Butter Toast Set each ($2.80 each). One set with Kopi and the other with Teh C.

Kopi was thick and the sweetness was to the rightness. It was unlike those bad quality coffees which one can taste the sourness. – 8/10

The thickness of the Teh C was also just right. It was not bitter. – 7/10

Soft boiled eggs were a disappointment. It was not as runny and beautiful as what I expected. I can still see some of the transparent egg whites. – 4/10

Kaya Butter Toast was very good. The crispiness was still there even when it turned cold. Also, the Kaya filling was generous and it had the “just-right” sweetness. – 9/10

This is their signature Fried Mee Siam $3.90. – 7/10
I still prefer Mee Siam that comes with gravy and with a hint of lime. Even so, the taste of this fried mee siam was still good when I squeezed lime onto it.

Overall Verdict: 7/10

I will still come back here again. Perhaps Daily Toast should come out with more food choices where others do not offer so as to attractive more customers.

KL Chee Cheong Fun Stall 吉隆坡豬腸粉, Jurong West St 91

One and only KL style Chee Cheong Fun stall 吉隆坡豬腸粉 in Singapore..

This KL style Chee Cheong Fun (steamed flat rice noodle roll) was highly recommended by my two Malaysian friends who live at the Block opposite the Coffee Shop at Jurong West St 91. The stall owners are China Nationality (Singapore PR) instead of Malaysians. They started this business about 7-8 years ago.

Customers can add side items such as fried ngoh hiang, tau kwa (beancurd), fishcake, etc.. They also sell steamed yam cake, chwee kueh, etc.

The Stall is located at the corner of this NTI Food Court (Coffee Shop).

The stall owners do not make the Chee Cheong Fun themselves but rather get them from a manufacturer. The texture is slightly different from the usual ones we had at other Kopitiams. It is still in a big flat piece although it has been rolled up and the texture is very soft but not mushy.

The best of all is their sweet sauce, soy sauce and sambal chilli paste which were self-made by them. These are the most important ingredients which I found theirs are so Superb!

This stall usually has a very long queue especially during weekends and public holidays but their speed is fast too. So it is still OK to queue up unless you are really in a hurry.

Overall verdict: 9/10 (Chee Cheong Fun and its sauces only)

Wang Jiao, Changi Airport T3 – 2nd Visit

Typical Traditional Breakfast..

Coffee/Tea, toast and eggs are still the typical traditional breakfast for most Chinese. I can have it for lunch and dinner too. I will never get tired of bread related products. In fact, I will be very depressed if I don’t get to eat any bread, bun or sandwich daily. Haha!

1. Kopi C – 7/10
The hot beverage standard was still there.

2. Milk Tea – 6/10
This was slightly too sweet. Perhaps condensed milk was added too much.

3. Soft Boiled Eggs – 7/10
This time, the eggs were runny and warmer. Perhaps it was breakfast time and the turnover was fast.

4. Toast with Kaya & Butter – 7/10
The toast was crispier unlike the French loaf toast which I had last month at this same outlet.

This time, the total bill came up to $8.10.

Overall verdict: 6.8/10

Yamazaki Boulangerie Chaude, Tampines 1

Sister outlet to Sun Moulin Yamazaki at Isetan Scotts..

I was so excited when I got to know that Yamazaki has opened a new outlet in Singapore at Tampines 1. Initially, I do not know that Yamazaki Boulangerie Chaude at Tampines 1 is the sister outlet to Sun Moulin Yamazaki at Isetan Scotts. I only got to know when I went into Yamazaki’s website http://www.yamazakipan.co.jp/english/businesses/overseas_ope/index.html.

Japanese Bakeries are getting popular. Some of the local popular Japanese Bakeries are Sun Moulin at Isetan Scotts, Provence at Holland Village, Mama Bakery at Square 2, Breadtalk, Four Leaves Group.

Look at the crowd at this new Yamazaki outlet at Tampines 1.

These were what I bought at Yamazaki Boulangerie Chaude at Tampines 1.

1. Apple Yogurt Bun $1.20 – 8/10
The bun was very soft, the apple was fresh and the “yogurt cream” was not too sweet. It was just the right taste for me. Perfect!

2. Cheese Torio $1.50 – 6/10
It tasted like a kind French bun topped with diced cheese & cheddar cheese. The crust was dry and hard for me. Personally, I still prefer soft cheese or mozzarella cheese to cheddar cheese or hard cheese.

I patronized Yamazaki when I was in Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most of their bread & bun selections were similar. However, there were also some items which may not be found in one another’s outlet. I miss the Cinnamon Swirl Loaf from Sun Moulin Central World Plaza Isetan in Bangkok. The cinnamon filling was generous and fragrant. It was a pity that I did not snap a photo of it.

Azur, Crowne Plaza Changi Airport T3

Wide selections of breakfast buffet items at Crowne Plaza Hotel..

Went for the breakfast buffet at Azur Restaurant, Crowne Plaza Hotel this morning. The ambience was good and staff were friendly too.

One thing I like most about this buffet spread was the wide selections of breads and pastries. Remember I am a bread-lover? Haha!

See the picture below. I was so tempted by its Bread Counter. They offered spreads such as French butter, miniature Bonne Maman strawberry, apricot and orange preserves, peanut butter and kaya.

Here come our dishes which were shared between my friend and I.

1. Asian – 6/10
The Asian food in this spread was quite disappointing. The Char Siew Bao filling was not appetizing as we cannot taste the pork. Was it because the pork was too minced and too much starch was added? The Char Siew Sor crust could have tasted better if it was still flaky but still, the filling was not what I like. The scallop dumpling starch skin was too thick and we cannot taste the scallop in the filling too. The Soon Kueh was ok – skin not too thick but the filling was a little bland. The Fried Mee Hoon and Nasi lemak rice were ordinary. The sambal shrimp was spicy enough but I cannot taste the crunchiness of the dried shrimp. The sambal egg was a little too sweet and not spicy.

2. Salads – 7/10
Vegetables were fresh. Black Pepper Beef ham was good and not much traced of fats. The Smoked Salmon was fresh too.

3. English Breakfast – 7/10
The streaky bacon was too sinful for two of us. We would prefer the back bacon instead. The “sunny side up” was nicely presented. Grilled Tomato with herbs was good too.

4. Breads, Pastries & Spreads – 8/10
A young female chef saw me grabbing a big cranberry loaf, suggested me slicing the corner of the loaf and toasting it before spreading with some cheese or butter. She said she and other chefs have tried this many times and love it very much. This was what I thought too. Indeed, the cranberry was so good especially when spread it with French butter and preserves. It goes well with peanut butter and kaya too.

5. Cereal pieces with milk – 7/10
A mixture of Cornflakes, Honey Star & Koko Krunch and added with Pura brand Fresh Milk.

6. Otak in Banana leaf – 4/10
Too much starch - cannot taste the fresh fish.

7. Waffle with maple syrup, whipped cream & diced mixed fruit – 5/10
The waffle was tough and too floury.

8. Skim Milk & Soya Milk – 6/10
Healthy drink.

Overall Verdict: 6.5/10

Well, I don’t mind going back for the buffet again if it has 1 for 1 promotion.

3 Chiffon Cakes with 3 different flavours

Yummy Pandan Chiffon Cake, Orange Chiffon Cake and Banana Chiffon Cake..

These beautiful Chiffon Cakes were made by my best friend and me last Friday. In order to meet my target to make three Chiffon Cakes for that day, I made the Pandan Chiffon Cake before my friend reached my place since my small oven can only bake one Chiffon at a time and the baking time is already taking about 60-70mins. Sigh..

They were all successfully made and yummy. They were so soft and light, just like my Mango Chiffon Cake which I made yesterday.

1. Pandan Chiffon Cake– made with packet coconut milk and oils were not added since the coconut milk is enough to moisture the Chiffon. I used the green Pandan Paste and the Pandan Flavour as I ran out of time. This Pandan Chiffon Cake turns out to be good.

2. Orange Chiffon Cake – made from freshly-squeezed orange juice. The fragrant and aroma of the orange was so strong and irresistible. I like this Orange Chiffon Cake the best. It could also due to Orange is my favourite fruit.

3. Banana Chiffon Cake – Any banana lovers? Can feel little banana bits which were not mashed totally.

My Chiffon pan is too small for my banana batter. Therefore I baked the mini Banana Chiffons using the leftover banana batter. These mini banana Chiffons were so cute.

All these Chiffon Cakes were awesome! My friends and family like them very much. My friend’s Mama likes the pandan chiffon the best due to the aroma of the coconut milk. The feeling of success is so good.

Next time, I want to try making Durian Chiffon Cake and Chocolate Chiffon Cake. Hope that the results will be as light, soft and tasty as these wonderful Chiffon Cakes. See my next post ya.
