Mango Chiffon Cake, Self-made

Very light and soft Mango Chiffon Cake..

I made this very nice Mango Chiffon Cake yesterday. They were so soft and light. I modified the initial Orange Chiffon Cake recipe and changed it to Mango Chiffon Cake recipe.

My colleagues tried these Mango Chiffon Cakes today and all of them commented nice, soft and fragrant. I feel like a bird flying in the sky. Haha!

This Mango Chiffon Cake had a strong mango aroma and the texture was so soft and light. Thanks fior the Orange Chiffon Cake recipe. Else, i won't be able to modify it to become my Mango Chiffon Cake recipe.

Tonight, I will be making three Chiffons with three different flavours - Pandan, Orange and Banana for my friend’s Mama who will be coming to Singapore from KL today. Also, my best friend wants me to demonstrate the Chiffon making process. Therefore, I am using this opportunity to kill two birds using one stone. Haha! Wish me good luck ya..

Wang Jiao, Changi Airport T3

Wang Loyalty Card is not accepted at this outlet..

We settled down at Wang Jiao for lunch since it was not crowded and it was considered a better place for chatting.

These were what we ordered.

1. Mee Siam – 5/10
Considering the ingredients used, I considered $3.60 for this plate of Mee Siam too expensive, especially when the Mee Siam gravy, being the most important ingredient, was too diluted to my liking.

2. French Loaf Toast with Kaya – 6/10
The loaf texture was tough and compact. It was also not crispy though it was served warmed. Worst, the Kaya filling was too little which was a disappointment.

3. Soft Boiled Eggs – 6/10
The eggs were still runny but slightly warm only.

4. Kopi C – 7/10
This Kopi C can still make it.

5. Horlick Kosong (without milk or sugar) – 7/10
The horlick was thick to my liking.

The total bill came up to $9.50.

Overall verdict: 6.2/10

Granny's Pancake, Albert Centre Temporary Market (Cooked Food Area)

Vegetarian Mee Chiang Kueh/Mee Jian Kuih (Pancakes) at Bugis..

I came across this Granny’s Pancake stall when I went to pack my lunch at the Albert Centre Temporary Food Centre (Bugis) today. Its Mee Chiang Kuehs are vegetarians - do not contain egg.

This stall was manned by two Aunties and it offers 3 types of fillings – Red Bean, Peanuts and Coconut. They were so generous with fillings that I cannot resist myself from buying.

I bought three pieces of Mee Chiang Kuehs: two with Peanut fillings and one with coconut fillings. Three pieces cost $2 only.

1. Mee Chiang Kueh with coconut fillings - 9/10.
The coconut filling is fragrant, moist and sweet.

2. Mee Chiang Kueh with Peanut filling - 9/10.
The filling is a mixture of coarse peanuts & fine sugar.

The Mee Chiang Kueh texture was so soft and moist. Even after leaving them in the lunch box for few hours, it remained soft.

According to the Aunties, they have other outlets at Whampoa, Toa Payoh, Tampines, Ang Mo Kio, Bedok and many more. However, they do not have a namecard, else I would have gotten one from them and list out all their outlet locations.

Jollibean Pancake, Plaza Singapura

Jollibean Rolled Pancake, bigger version..

Yesterday, I suddenly craved for Jollibean’s peanut pancake. Therefore I went Plaza Sin to buy one as my lunch as well as to collect my lucky draw prize for the movie “Friday the 13” at Basement 1.

This is the bigger version of the rolled peanut pancake. I usually see the mini version for rolled peanut which is either packed in 3s or 6s at Jollibean Kiosk.

This crust was not as thick as its triangle pancake (Mee Chiang Kueh). It tasted nice too.

Mr Bean Pancake, Dhoby Ghaut Exchange

Japanese style Mr Bean pancake..

It was an early morning. I saw many people queuing at Mr Bean Kiosk at Dhoby Ghaut Exchange. Most of them bought the set which came with a cup of Soya milk and a pancake. I supposed these are one of the typical breakfasts nowadays.

The queue cleared very fast as the soya milk and pancake were pre-packed. Despite they were pre-packed, they were still very fresh because the turnover was fast.

I didn't buy a set but merely a peanut pancake back to office. The standard was the same as what I bought at Changi Airport T3 outlet. I don't have to travel so far just to buy these pancakes liao. haha!

Paragon Breadtalk Silver, Orchard - 2nd visit

Cute Cream Cheese Cranberry Mini Toast..

I went back Paragon Breadtalk Silver again. This time, I bought their Cream Cheese Cranberry Mini Toast at $3.80. It consisted of 8 mini buns. The bun texture was different from the usual bigger version which is flat.

Cream Cheese Cranberry Mini Toast - 8/10

The bun was so soft and light. The dried cranberries added sweetness to the bun. The cream cheese filling was not too sweet. Overall combination was food.

I am begining to love the bread from Paragon Breadtalk Silver at Orchard. Being a bread-lover, these breads really makes up my day..

Teck Kee Wanton Mee, Zion Road

Special Wanton Mee with roasted chicken..

Came across this Teck Kee Wanton Mee Coffeeshop several times but do not have a chance to try it yet. It was only last Sat after knocking off from work, I went there for late lunch. This was the last plate of Wanton Mee for the day becos the stall was closing. I'm so fortunate..

This Wanton Mee is very special. Is it Hong Kong style?

It consists of:

1. Mee - Tastes like egg noodle. Very QQ and nice but the sauce tastes like those black soya chicken sauce. It is quite watery. It will taste better if the sauce can be improved.

2. Char Siew Pork - Colour is unattractive. It is neither brown, black nor red. It's pink! Seems that the colour has faded. Char Siew needs to be improved too.

3. Roasted Chicken - Was given the chicken thigh. Chicken piece is tender but already turns cold. Perhaps it is already coming to the closing.

4. Deep Fried Wanton - The filling is made of fish paste? Doesn't taste like pork. It is not crispy anymore.

5. Wanton in soup - Wanton is ordinary but the soup is nice :)

Below is the enlarged photo of this special Teck Kee Wanton Mee.

This Wanton Mee costs $4. Considering the ingredients and sides given, it is value for money.
Perhaps I should come here again in the morning when all the ingredients are still fresh.
Thought of trying the Xin Fei Fei Wanton Mee inside the Zion Riverside Food Centre too for comparison but the stall auntie said it is not ready yet. Thought the stall is 24-hour?

Verdict - 6/10

Al Dente Trattoria, Holland Village

Expensive meal!

Was here for dinner last Friday night with 3 friends. This place was recommended by LS who dined at the Great World outlet a couple of times few years ago. She will usually go to this restaurant whenever she craves for Spaghetti Bolognaise.

Front view – There are both indoor and outdoor seats. Reservation was made in advance therefore we were given the indoor seats. Despite the restaurant is air-conditioned and we were sitting indoor, we still feel very hot. The staff told us that the air-con was already to its lowest and he concluded that the warm temperature should be due to the hot weather recently. Well, we got to live with it then.

Our orders for that night were:

1. Fontanafredda - Here comes our wine. LS initially chose Shiraz but it wasn’t chilled. There were only two options for chilled wine so she chose this.

2. One dinner set that comes with
A) Crab Bisque – 5/10
It should be made from puréed crab. The soup was too thick and creamy for me.

B) Starter – Bread topped with melted Cheese – 6/10
I thought this was Focaccia bread but it did not taste like one. The bread was very soft but too ordinary. I missed the Herbs Focaccia which my friend ever bought me from Garibaldi. It was absolutely delicious. I must go back there one of these days.

I divided it into 4 so that each of us can have one.

C) Prawn Salad – 6/10
It was fresh, simple and so-so only.

D) Oven-baked snapper and king prawn with deep fried potato balls and sautéed baby asparagus – 6/10
The prawn was big, fresh and crunchy. As for the fish, it was too tough to my liking.

3. Spaghetti Bolognaise – 8/10
It was Al dente! (means “to the tooth” in Italian phrase). It was neither too soft nor hard. The texture was slightly chewy when I bit onto it. Neither the sauce was over-added. I read about the Italians way is to toss pasta with just enough sauce to coat it without leaving a big puddle on the bottom of the plate. This dish was exactly what was described.

4. Hawaiian Pizza – 7/10
Wood Fire pizza topped with generous spread of Mozzarella cheese and pineapple. The crust was so thin that you will not feel the guilt of having too much carbohydrate. However, the crispness was still not there yet. I still prefer the one I had at Timbre the day before.

5. Sausage & Artichoke Pizza – 6/10
This is a promotion item that costs only $10. The crust size was slightly smaller than the usual one. The topping choices were quite limited but what do you expect from a $10 wood fire pizza?

6. Tiramisu – 6/10
A popular Italian dessert. The liqueur was too mild.

This was one of the expensive meal I ever had.

Most likely, I will come back for its Spaghetti Bolognaise again.

Timbre @ Substation, Armenian

Clare’s Birthday at Timbre @ Substation

This Timbre hideout at The Substation Garden is quite well-known and always become crowded especially after 9pm. Their live band usually starts at 10pm+.

Most of us are virgin to this place. First-timer may have difficulty finding this place as it is situated behind The Substation main building near the Old National Library site. Do check out the location map before you lost your way.

Below is the location map extracted from Timbre website: http://www.timbre.com.sg/location.htm.

This is the entrance which is also the exit of the restaurant and it faces the carpark.

Band Stage..

The seven of us..

Bee’s Shirley Temple..

My Lime Margarita..

1. All American Mini Beef Burger – 6/10
It came in 3 mini burgers per set. We ordered one set only as three of us do not eat beef. I did not try it this time. The one I tried was at Mount Sophia outlet. The beef patty was not very juicy but the mini burger looks cute and the presentation is good.

2. Louisiana Fries – 6/10
Most of them like this Cajun thick-cut fries which were topped with Tartar sauce. They were snapped up within the next 15mins.

3. Timbre Chicken Wings – 7/10
The wings were too dry to my liking. But most of my friends prefer this to the Buffalo wings.

4. Half & Half – Buffalo Chicken & Roasted Duck – 8/10
These two are their popular toppings. The roasted duck is fragrant and delicious. The pizza crust is so thin and crispy. You won’t feel the sinfulness of being over-carbohydrate.

5. Half & Half – Chicken Fajitas & Spicy Cajun Chicken – 6/10
Not too spicy.

6. Timbre Seafood Platter – 7/10
It came with fresh squid rings, prawns, mussels, fish fillet and potato wedges. They are served with tartar sauce and Thai chili sauce. I only managed to try the squid rings and wedges. The squid is Q-Q and the wedge is fat and thick. Nice!

7. German Sausages and Mash – 7/10
The sausage is cheesy. Cheese lovers, try it. The mash potato is not very creamy or I would rather say drier than expected. This is what I like the best. It means less butter – healthier.

8. Buffalo Chicken Wings – 7/10
The sauce is spicy sour. Shiok man! But most of them do not fancy it. Hmmm..

Look at the these ants on our table. These species are so different from what we commonly see. They are enjoying their food too.

Overall, the service is good and the staff, who are mostly non-Singaporeans, are friendly too.
